Overview on Elder Mediation

Elder Mediation is a growing area. Issues surrounding older members of our families are difficult to articulate and awkward to broach. However if these issues are allowed to fester they can cause resentments, misunderstandings and leave family units ill-prepared for the needs of their aging members.

The MII recognises the importance of this unique and growing area of mediation practice and in response to the demand for qualified Elder Mediators has established a specialist training programme for mediators wishing to work in this area. In devising its training programme, the MII has established a partnership with Elder Mediation International Network (EMIN) as the acknowledged world leader in this sector.

To be eligible to undertake Elder mediation training, a learner must have successfully completed MII approved Certified Mediation Training or equivalent.

The Elder Mediation Specialist Training is divided into two areas of mandatory training requirement:

1. Trainer led through face to face or on-line delivery 42 Hours
2. Prescribed learning chosen by the trainer and undertaken through self-directed learning 28 Hours

Learners are required to have 100% attendance on the course.

Training Course Requirements

The principal trainer must:

· be an Advanced Member of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland,

· satisfy the EMIN requirement for trainers,

· must hold a training qualification

· must have Elder Mediation experience, with a minimum of 100 hours per year in the previous three years.

Course Content

Course Content will typically include modules relating to:

Conflict in the family life cycle intergenerational and multiparty family dynamics

Elder Abuse and Neglect Impact of Ageism, Sexism and Cultural Diversity

Impact of Dementia and Age related issues on the individual and their family

Capacity and Assisted Decision Making Legislation

Advanced Care Directives, Guardianship and Power of Attorney

Ethical Issues relevant to Elder Mediation

Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults

Certification

1. All MII members who wish to practise Elder Mediation will be required to attain and maintain an EMIN certification as a basic requirement to practise in this area,

2. MII will require members who practise elder mediation to provide evidence of their annual certification renewal with EMIN and fulfilment of all EMIN CPD requirements as the MII code of Ethics is the Code to which MII members are answerable,

3. MII will promote the EMIN code of Ethics, the EMIN Safeguarding Vulnerable Adult document and other information regarding the MII/EMIN partnership on their website,

Membership Fees

It is the continual responsibility of each MII member and each EMIN member to pay the annual subscription to the respective organisations and satisfy any relevant requirements to retain accreditation of the respective organisations.
